On March 13th, Devaraj Southworth, VP of Online and Mobile Partnerships, participated in a SXSW Interactive panel discussion on digital commerce of the future. Aptly titled “From Leather to Smartphone—The Wallet Evolves,” the discussion focused on how digital is driving major change for both consumers and merchants, and why this is a welcome change, given the advantages and future potential.

Devaraj was joined on stage by Don Kingsborough, VP of Retail and Prepaid Payments at PayPal, and Steve Schultz, COO of Pageonce. Moderator Lauren Goode, Senior Editor at the Wall Street Journal’s All Things D, opened the discussion by asking the panelists to share some of their personal spending habits and how their respective companies fit into their financial solutions today, before diving into what we can expect in the near future.

“The digital transition has been a gradual evolution,” Southworth explained. “Serve is unique because it is a network rather than a wallet. It’s not just about a plastic card or mobile apps or even a Web site—we’re moving towards the idea of an ‘account’ in the cloud with an offline capability that can be used today.”

All panelists agreed the major players of the future are those companies that genuinely make things easier for both merchants and consumers. Partnerships and collaboration in this ecosystem will be critical. Opt-in incentives, such as discounts or special offers, will play a major part in the widespread adoption of mobile wallets and NFC payments. “When you know who is actually redeeming offers and how much they are spending, you can be much smarter about tweaking and targeting those offers—and rewarding those users appropriately,” Southworth said.

The panel discussion was only the first stop in what will be a busy week of events, discussions, and collaborations. While in Austin, Southworth took the opportunity to meet with current American Express partners, such as Ticketmaster, to discuss enhancements planned for the coming year. Southworth also offered time to speak with exciting start-ups, as well as larger players, about Serve’s value in the marketplace.

Serve’s participation at SXSW is just the tip of the iceberg for 2012. American Express launched the Sync program on Twitter, and Serve has been integrated to allow users to request and send money from friends and peers within Facebook. This year promises to be big, as users can expect to continue to see new product enhancements, partnership integrations, and even more reasons to transition from leather to digital.

One of our favorite times of the year is quickly approaching, SXSW! This year, the 19th annual SXSW Interactive festival will take place from March 9 to 13 and, here at Serve, we’re preparing for three days of nerding out in Austin. Not to mention that we’re looking forward to experiencing all the great things Austin has to offer –– BBQ, TexMex, cowboy boots, and hot weather! Aside from attending the keynotes (as many sessions as we can) and tons of networking, here’s what we’ll be up to:

1. On March 10, 11, and 12 we’ll be co-sponsoring a grilled cheese sandwich stand with GroupMe. At the GroupMe Grill (350 Trinity Street, Austin, TX) we will have brand ambassadors onsite giving visitors a peek at the prototype demo of digital payments platform integrated with GroupMe’s messaging interface. So come stop by the GroupMe Grill for a “Serve-eza” (come on, who doesn’t want to enjoy ice cold beverage!), check out some demos, get some swag, and see how GroupMe and Serve are partnering up in the mobile payments space. Hours are from 12-5pm.

2. Also our own David Messenger, Executive VP, Online/Mobile, will be speaking on Sunday, March 11 from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. on the panel “No Wallet? No Problem. Enter Mobile Payments,” alongside executives from NXP and Isis. You’ll hear David and his fellow panelists talk about the future of NFC and mobile payments.

3. And finally, be sure to keep your eye out for our lovely Serve Travelling Trivia host as she challenges SXSW attendees with tough trivia questions for a chance to win a little extra money.

So put on your cowboy boots and come say hello to the Serve team at SXSW!

Ps. Don’t wait until Austin to check out Serve –– click here and we’ll give you $10 to try it

SXSW is big on community involvement and relies heavily on outside votes for any programming slot. This year, we’ve submitted three speakers from Serve, all with different, but equally interesting speaking topics. Please help us by casting your vote for them before Friday, September 2. Please note you need to sign in and register to officially cast a vote. I assure you the registration process takes just a few seconds!

Thanks for your help!
